Tolu Arokodare Embraces Ajax Bench Role as Nigerian Targets Trophies

Tolu Arokodare has insisted that Ajax's collective ambitions come before his personal desire for regular starts after making an impressive impact from the bench in the club's Eredivisie opener. The Nigeria international provided an assist as Ajax defeated PEC Zwolle 2-0 away from home on August 9.

Arokodare entered the game as a substitute and helped Ajax find a way through a difficult contest. The victory gave the Amsterdam club a positive start to their league campaign after finishing fifth in the Eredivisie last season.

The 25-year-old accepts that competition for attacking positions will be intense. Kasper Dolberg has started ahead of him, while Marcos Leonardo is also competing for opportunities in Ajax's forward line.

Arokodare has made it clear that he wants to start matches, but he understands that selection depends on tactical plans, team needs and player fitness. He says he is prepared to contribute regardless of whether he starts or comes off the bench.

That attitude was evident against PEC Zwolle. His assist helped Ajax secure three points, while substitute Jorthy Mokio and Julian Brandt scored the goals that settled the contest. Arokodare's contribution therefore came at an important moment as Ajax looked to close out a difficult away match.

The Nigerian joined Ajax from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan in July. The agreement includes an option for the Dutch club to make the transfer permanent next summer.

Arokodare arrived in Amsterdam after a difficult first season in England. He made 38 appearances for Wolves and scored six goals before the club sent him to Ajax for the 2026/27 campaign.

His move to Ajax also represents a return to a league where his physical qualities could become a major asset. At Genk, he finished as the Belgian Pro League's top scorer during the 2024/25 season before moving to Wolves.

Ajax are also balancing domestic football with their European campaign. The club drew 2-2 away to Shelbourne on August 13 but advanced 5-3 on aggregate after winning the first leg 3-1 in Amsterdam.

The European qualification gives Arokodare another platform to compete for minutes. His pace and physical presence have already attracted attention, with Ajax legend Ronald de Boer identifying his speed as a key strength for the team.

Arokodare has set a demanding target for his first season in Amsterdam. He wants Ajax to win matches, score goals and compete for every trophy available.

His immediate focus, however, is on contributing whenever coach Míchel Sánchez calls on him. The Nigerian's early response to competition for his place suggests he is ready to put team success ahead of personal frustration.
