The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially unveiled its roster for the 24th CAA Senior Athletics Championships. The continental tournament is scheduled to take place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra. Nigeria is sending a strong contingent of 45 athletes to the event, which runs from May 12 to May 17, 2026. The squad is comprised of 25 female athletes and 20 male stars.
Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, is the biggest name on the list. She missed out on defending her title in the previous edition due to illness and is eager for redemption. Amusan will compete in her signature hurdles event alongside Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday. Her presence provides a massive boost to the Nigerian team as they aim for the top of the medals table.
The women's sprint team is led by Rosemary Chukwuma, who has shown exceptional form this season. Chukwuma is entered for the 100m individual race and the 4x100m relay. She will be joined by teammates Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson Omokwe, and Tejiri Ugoh. Experienced quarter-miler Patience Okon George also joins the squad for the 400m and relay events. Field event specialist Ruth Usoro and hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye are also confirmed for the trip to Accra.
On the men’s side, Favour Ashe headlines the 100m sprint and relay categories. He will be supported by high-profile sprinters Enoch Adegoke and Chidera Ezeakor. African shot put champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is expected to defend his title in the field events. The 400m team features strong competitors including Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli, and Chidi Okezie. Javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure and long jumper Romeo Bernard round out the men's technical entries.
Nigeria finished third at the 2024 edition held in Douala, Cameroon, securing five gold medals. The federation aims to surpass that performance this year and overtake regional rivals Kenya and South Africa. This tournament serves as a vital preparation phase for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The team is expected to arrive in Accra on May 10 ahead of the technical meetings and opening ceremonies.
