President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for securing the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Describing the achievement as a “bronze that feels like gold,” Tinubu praised the team’s resilience, determination, and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
In a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Saturday in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the team’s impressive comeback after their semi-final loss to hosts Morocco. The Super Eagles defeated seven-time AFCON champions Egypt in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time.
The President commended the players for demonstrating the determination and perseverance that define the Nigerian spirit. “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final to Morocco, dashing the hopes of our people to win the championship. However, our players remained undaunted, and their resilience has now been rewarded,” Tinubu said.
This bronze medal marks Nigeria’s ninth in AFCON history. The nation has won the title three times, finished as runners-up four times, and claimed third place on nine occasions. Tinubu expressed pride in the team, noting that Nigerians would celebrate as the Super Eagles receive their hard-earned medals on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.
