Tinubu Fulfils $100,000 Reward Promise to Super Falcons After Historic WAFCON Triumph

Posted : 04 November 2026

President Bola Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria's Super Falcons with the promised $100,000 each following their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph in Morocco in July 2025.

The players have begun receiving payments of approximately ₦140 million, representing the naira equivalent of the financial reward announced by the President after Nigeria's dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in the final.

The payment fulfils Tinubu's pledge to recognise the team's remarkable achievement after the Falcons recovered from a two-goal deficit to reclaim the African title.

Nigeria's comeback victory, secured through a spirited second-half display, further consolidated the Super Falcons' position as Africa's most successful women's national team.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed appreciation to the President for honouring his commitment, describing the gesture as meaningful recognition of the team's hard work and contribution to Nigerian sports.

The latest reward reinforces the Federal Government's growing emphasis on providing tangible incentives for athletes who excel in international competitions.

Tinubu had similarly fulfilled his $100,000 reward promise to members of D'Tigress following their successful defence of the FIBA Women's AfroBasket title in 2025, which extended Nigeria's winning streak to five consecutive continental championships.

The National Sports Commission (NSC), under the leadership of Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, has also pursued initiatives aimed at improving athlete welfare, expanding international exposure and strengthening sports administration.

The Commission has overseen Nigeria's hosting of about 30 international sporting competitions, further positioning the country as a destination for major sporting events.

The NSC commended Tinubu for his consistent support for Nigerian athletes, noting that recognising sporting achievements through financial rewards would strengthen motivation and encourage greater commitment to national representation.

The fulfilment of the latest pledge is expected to reinforce confidence among athletes and sports administrators while promoting a culture in which outstanding performances receive meaningful national recognition.
