Three Roles Morgan Rogers Could Fill Under Xabi Alonso at Chelsea

Morgan Rogers is set to become Chelsea's record signing after agreeing a reported £117 million move from Aston Villa, with head coach Xabi Alonso already outlining how the England international fits into his plans for the 2026/27 season.

The 23-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract after Chelsea beat Arsenal to his signature. Discussions with Alonso reportedly played a major role in convincing Rogers to move to Stamford Bridge, with the manager promising him a significant role in the team's attacking setup.

Rogers is expected to spend much of his time on the left wing, where he enjoyed considerable success during his time at Aston Villa. Nearly half of his appearances last season came from that position, where he regularly cut inside onto his stronger right foot to create and score goals. Chelsea view him as a major upgrade in an area where they have lacked consistent attacking output.

Alonso could also deploy Rogers in a central attacking role if he returns to the 3-4-2-1 formation that brought him success at Bayer Leverkusen. In that system, Rogers could operate alongside Cole Palmer behind the main striker, creating one of the Premier League's most exciting creative partnerships.

Both players are comfortable carrying the ball through midfield, shooting from distance and unlocking compact defences. Rogers' ability to make late runs into the penalty area could complement Palmer's passing range and vision, giving Chelsea another dimension in attack.

The England international also offers valuable cover on the right wing. Although it is not his preferred position, Rogers has shown he can create chances and stretch opposition defences from either flank. His versatility provides Alonso with greater tactical flexibility throughout the season.

Chelsea's options on the right remain uncertain. Young Brazilian winger Estevao is still working his way back after injury, while Pedro Neto's long-term future at the club has been the subject of speculation. Rogers' ability to play across the front line gives Chelsea additional depth and allows Alonso to rotate his attacking options without sacrificing quality.

The arrival of Rogers would continue Chelsea's squad rebuild under Alonso following the additions of Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha. If the transfer is completed as expected, the England international is likely to become a central figure in Chelsea's bid to challenge for domestic and European honours.
