Thomas Tuchel Seeks England Response Against Spain at Wembley

Posted : 24 September 2026

England will begin their new Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, with Thomas Tuchel looking for a strong response following the disappointment of their 2026 World Cup semi-final defeat. The match comes just nine weeks after England’s 2-1 loss to Argentina in Atlanta ended their hopes of reaching the final.

England had led Argentina late in the semifinal before conceding twice, with Tuchel’s defensive substitutions coming under scrutiny afterward. The German coach has said there is little value in dwelling on the defeat, although he admitted he was left disappointed by England’s failure to secure a second World Cup title.

Bukayo Saka acknowledged that the players still feel the impact of the defeat. The Arsenal winger, who remained on the bench during the semifinal, said the squad continues to carry a “scar” from the loss but is now focused on beginning a new international campaign. Saka later scored a hat-trick as England defeated France 6-4 to claim third place at the World Cup.

Spain provide a formidable test for Tuchel’s side. Luis de la Fuente’s team won the World Cup after beating Argentina in the final and arrive at Wembley as the benchmark England are seeking to challenge. Spain also defeated England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final.

Tuchel has described the meeting with Spain as a fresh beginning for England as preparations build toward Euro 2028, which will be hosted on home soil. He has also said he believes the gap between England and the leading international teams is narrowing.

The Nations League campaign gives England four matches in Group A3 during the current international period. After hosting Spain, the Three Lions will travel to face Czechia and Croatia before returning to Wembley for another meeting with the Czech side.

Spain, meanwhile, enter the competition with a strong recent record and will provide an immediate test of England’s progress under Tuchel. With both sides among the leading teams in Group A3, Saturday’s meeting offers an early indication of how the two nations begin their next international cycle.
