Thomas Tuchel Confident but Cautious as England Prepare for DR Congo World Cup Clash

Posted : 01 July 2026

England manager Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that his side will enter Wednesday's FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against DR Congo national football team as favourites, but insisted his players must not underestimate an opponent that has exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout stage.

The Three Lions are chasing their first major international trophy since winning the 1966 FIFA World Cup, although their performances at the tournament in the United States have yet to fully convince. England opened their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia before being held to a frustrating goalless draw by Ghana. They then secured top spot in Group L with a 2-0 win over Panama, thanks to goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.

Speaking ahead of the knockout encounter, Tuchel said he welcomes the pressure that comes with managing England. He believes expectations are justified, stressing that both the squad and supporters expect the team to progress beyond the Round of 32. The German coach said embracing the role of favourites is part of competing for major honours.

Tuchel also pointed to the unpredictable nature of the knockout stage, noting the surprise eliminations of Germany and the Netherlands on penalties against Paraguay and Morocco respectively. He added that Brazil and Canada also faced difficult tests, highlighting how slim the margins have been throughout the Round of 32. While confident in England's quality, he said his side respects DR Congo, who impressed during the group stage with competitive performances against Portugal and Colombia.

England will be without defenders Reece James and Jarell Quansah after Tuchel confirmed both players are unavailable because of injury. Their absence leaves England with fewer options at right-back, a decision that could invite criticism of the squad selection.

Despite England relying heavily on Kane and Bellingham for decisive moments so far, Tuchel said he has no concerns about depending on his star players. He described it as the responsibility of elite footballers to deliver in crucial moments and expressed confidence that the pair can continue making the difference if needed.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could also play a vital role, particularly if the match extends to penalties. Now competing in his fifth major tournament as England's first-choice goalkeeper, Pickford said lifting the World Cup remains the dream for every player in the squad. However, he stressed that the team's complete focus is on overcoming DR Congo before thinking about the challenges that may follow.
