Terem Moffi Expresses Deep Heartbreak Over Super Eagles Missing Out On World Cup Qualification

Posted : 10 June 2026

Nigerian forward Terem Moffi has bared his mind on the national team's failure to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The OGC Nice striker, currently on loan at Porto, called the qualification failure a devastating experience for both the squad and local supporters. Nigeria failed to pick up one of Africa's ten qualification slots; this represents the first time the West African nation has missed back-to-back editions of the global tournament.

The Super Eagles previously sat out the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a painful away-goals defeat against Ghana. Their 2026 campaign also fell flat after dropping critical points during the group stage fixtures. Moffi featured in five qualification matches during the cycle; he noted that the players failed to maximize their opportunities despite boasting immense European club talent.

The 27-year-old striker raised serious concerns about the advancing age of the current crop of national team players. He noted that he will be 31 by the time the 2030 tournament arrives; most of his current international teammates will also be well into their 30s. Moffi admitted it is highly probable that many established stars will be replaced by younger talents before the next qualification cycle concludes.

New head coach Eric Chelle is currently rebuilding the national team squad following their elimination. The technical crew is shifting focus toward upcoming continental fixtures to restore the country's football reputation. Moffi stated that missing out on the tournament is a deep professional regret that many members of the squad will live with forever.
