Tenebe sets continental target for Edo Queens after league triumph

Posted : 15 June 2026

Fresh from guiding Edo Queens to the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title, Chairman of the club, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, has shifted attention from domestic success to a bigger ambition — establishing Edo Queens as one of Africa's leading women's football clubs.

Speaking after the club secured its second league title in three seasons following a successful Super Six campaign in Port Harcourt, Tenebe said the achievement represented only the first step in a broader developmental vision for the Benin City-based side.

According to him, Edo Queens must now evolve beyond winning trophies and focus on building a sustainable football institution capable of competing with the best clubs on the continent.

"We have won the trophy, and we thank God for this achievement. But beyond winning trophies, my dream is to remodel Edo Queens into an international-standard football club that can compete favorably anywhere in Africa and the world," Tenebe stated.

The chairman, who also serves as Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, attributed the team's success to the support of Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration and its commitment to sports development.

He commended the players, coaching crew, supporters, management, and the Edo State Sports Commission under the leadership of Amadin Desmond Enabulele for their contributions to the club's title-winning campaign.

Tenebe disclosed that plans are already underway to strengthen the club's foundation through improved infrastructure, enhanced welfare packages, modern administrative systems, youth development initiatives, sports science programmes, and increased media visibility.

He added that strategic partnerships and sponsorship opportunities would also be pursued to position the club for greater success on the continental stage.

With women's football continuing to experience significant growth across Africa and beyond, Tenebe believes Edo Queens have the potential to become a benchmark for excellence.

"Edo Queens have shown they can become champions. The next step is to build a structure that will make the club a reference point in Africa.

"We want a club that young girls across Nigeria will dream of playing for. We want a club that will attract sponsors, international partnerships and represent Nigeria proudly in continental competitions," he said.

Tenebe also praised head coach Moses Aduku and his technical crew for steering the team through a challenging season, noting that their resilience helped the club recover from setbacks and emerge champions.

Edo Queens sealed the title after a strong finish in the Super Six, including crucial victories and a decisive draw against Bayelsa Queens on the final day.

The league triumph has earned the club a place in the WAFU B Women's Champions League qualifiers, where they will seek qualification for the CAF Women's Champions League.

While celebrations continue following another successful domestic campaign, Tenebe insists the focus has already shifted to preparing Edo Queens for greater challenges ahead as the club pursues its ambition of becoming a dominant force in African women's football.

The grand vision laid out by the leadership underscores a determination to elevate Nigerian women's football to global prominence. By focusing on structural reforms and continental competitiveness, the club aims to build a lasting legacy that extends far beyond domestic boundaries. As preparation begins for the upcoming WAFU B qualifiers, Edo Queens carry both local championship honors and structural ambitions into their next chapter.
