Ten-Woman Fortress Ladies Edge Spunky Blazers to Reach Edo FA Cup Final

Posted : 17 April 2026

Fortress Ladies FC displayed immense resilience to defeat Spunky Blazers FC 1-0 in the semi-finals of the 2026 Edo State FA Cup. The match at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium was defined by an early goal and a gritty defensive stand. This victory ensures the team a spot in the final against regional heavyweights Edo Queens FC.

The game started with Fortress Ladies taking immediate control of the tempo and possession. Their aggression paid off in the 9th minute when Adokpayi Ehi executed a brilliant free kick. The strike flew past the Spunky Blazers goalkeeper to give the favorites an early lead.

However, the dynamics of the match shifted dramatically in the 31st minute. Goalkeeper Success Omorodion received a straight red card for handling the ball outside her penalty area. This forced Fortress Ladies to play with ten women for the remaining hour of the contest.

The technical bench reacted quickly by introducing substitute goalkeeper Ajala Ayomide. She made an immediate impact by saving the resulting free kick and maintaining the lead until halftime. Alongside Grace Ufot, the substitutes provided the defensive stability needed to counteract the numerical disadvantage.

Throughout the second half, Fortress Ladies refused to simply defend their narrow lead. They continued to create dangerous opportunities, including a header from Favour Enodumwenben that narrowly missed the target. Their superior game management allowed them to frustrate the Spunky Blazers’ attackers as time ran out.

Spunky Blazers launched several late attacks in a desperate attempt to find an equalizer. The Fortress Ladies' defensive unit remained organized and repelled every cross and shot directed at their goal. The final whistle confirmed a hard-earned victory that highlighted the team’s mental toughness.

By reaching the final, Fortress Ladies have also qualified for the President’s Federation Cup for the third year in a row. This consistency cements their status as a rising power in the Nigerian women’s football scene. They now prepare for a high-profile showdown with Edo Queens for the state trophy.
