The CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations witnessed a dramatic conclusion to Group C action on Wednesday. Heavyweights Tanzania and Mali both secured safe passage to the tournament quarter-finals. By doing so, both nations officially booked their tickets to the prestigious FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year.
Mali delivered a commanding performance to defeat Tanzania 2-1 in their highly anticipated group finale. The Young Eagles started with blistering intensity and found the net after just three minutes. Prolific striker Abdoulaye Touré clinical finish gave the West Africans an early advantage.
Touré doubled the lead in the 41st minute with an excellent strike after a period of intense pressure. Tanzania fought back gallantly late in the second half. Forward Hassan Mkindai pulled one back in the 82nd minute to set up a grandstand finish. Mali held their nerve to secure maximum points.
Despite the narrow loss, Tanzania still finished at the summit of Group C on goal difference. Both nations celebrated widely at the final whistle as the top two positions guaranteed global tournament qualification. The coaches expressed immense pride in their players for achieving the primary objective of the campaign.
In the other decisive group fixture, Mozambique fought hard to earn a vital 2-1 victory over regional rivals Angola. Allan Figueiredo opened the scoring for Mozambique in the 22nd minute before Francisco Eliseu quickly equalized. Charif Carlos netted the winner in the 55th minute to secure third place.
The vital victory ensures the Young Mambas remain in contention for a World Cup berth via the playoffs. Meanwhile, a disappointed Angola squad bows out of the continental showpiece after finishing bottom of the table.
