Tammy Abraham Double Sends Aston Villa into Carabao Cup Fourth Round

Tammy Abraham scored twice as Aston Villa defeated Coventry City 3-1 on Wednesday to book their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The striker took advantage of his opportunity to impress Unai Emery after remaining at Villa during the summer transfer window despite interest from elsewhere. Abraham had rejected loan opportunities to continue his fight for a place in Emery’s squad.

His performance came after the arrival of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for a reported £65 million, increasing competition for attacking positions. Abraham responded with two composed finishes to help Villa secure a much-needed victory after a difficult start to their Premier League campaign.

Emery made seven changes to the side that lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, with Abraham handed a starting role. The striker wasted little time making an impact, opening the scoring after just seven minutes.

Coventry responded in impressive fashion when Victor Torp produced a superb free-kick from distance to beat the Villa goalkeeper and level the contest. Gustavo Hamer also threatened from range as the hosts attempted to build on their equaliser.

Villa restored their advantage before half-time through Ross Barkley. The midfielder glanced a header into the net from a corner, punishing Coventry’s failure to properly deal with the set piece.

Abraham then added his second shortly before the hour mark. He battled past Coventry debutant Stephen Mfuni and finished from close range after Villa created another opportunity from a corner.

The result offered Emery’s side some relief after Villa’s difficult opening to the Premier League season. They had suffered three defeats in their first four league matches and entered the cup tie looking for a positive response.

For Coventry, the defeat continued a difficult run. Frank Lampard’s side have now lost five of their opening six matches across all competitions, while their defensive problems were again exposed after conceding three goals.

The meeting was the first between the clubs since 2001, when Villa defeated Coventry 3-2 in a Premier League match that contributed to the Sky Blues’ relegation.

Abraham’s display gives Emery another attacking option to consider as Aston Villa look to recover from their poor league start, while their progress into the Carabao Cup fourth round provides an opportunity to build momentum.
