Switzerland secured top spot in World Cup Group B on Wednesday after earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Canada in Vancouver. The result ensured the Swiss finished first in the standings, while Canada also advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.
With both teams already in strong positions heading into the final group match, the contest carried added significance as the winner would claim first place and potentially benefit from a more favorable path in the knockout rounds.
After a competitive first half with chances at both ends, Switzerland broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. Ruben Vargas finished off a well-worked move, arriving unmarked at the far post to convert Johan Manzambi’s cross and give the Europeans the lead.
Manzambi then doubled Switzerland’s advantage in the 57th minute. The midfielder capitalized on a goalkeeping mistake after strong build-up play from Breel Embolo, firing home to score his third goal of the tournament and further strengthen his growing reputation.
Canada responded by making several substitutions in an attempt to change the momentum. The co-hosts increased the pressure and created opportunities through Jonathan David and others, but Switzerland’s defense remained resilient.
The breakthrough eventually arrived when substitute Promise David pulled a goal back with just over 15 minutes remaining. The forward stretched to meet a precise pass from Nathan Saliba, setting up a tense finish and reigniting Canadian hopes of snatching first place in the group.
A draw would have been enough to send Canada through as group winners, and the hosts pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Several dangerous set-piece situations followed in the closing stages, but Switzerland held firm to preserve their lead and secure maximum points.
The victory lifted Switzerland to seven points from three matches, while Canada finished three points behind in second place. Both teams progressed to the last 32, with Switzerland set to face one of the tournament’s best third-placed sides and Canada preparing for a meeting with the runner-up from Group A.
Before kickoff, an emotional moment unfolded as Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone, who suffered a broken leg in the team's previous match against Qatar, was welcomed onto the pitch in a wheelchair and received a standing ovation from the crowd at BC Place.
Elsewhere in Group B, Bosnia-Herzegovina finished third after defeating Qatar 3-1. Their four-point tally leaves them waiting to discover whether it will be enough to secure a place among the best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage.
For Canada, the result marked another milestone in a breakthrough tournament despite the defeat. Having never won a World Cup match before this edition, the co-hosts have now reached the knockout rounds for the first time and will continue their historic journey in Los Angeles.
