Suraj Lawal scored an injury-time goal to secure a 1-1 draw for Abia Warriors against Rivers United in a pulsating Matchday 16 encounter of the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
The Warriors could easily have won the game, but profligacy in front of goal proved costly.
It was a highly tactical match, with the Warriors taking control from the first whistle. However, their frontline failed to convert several clear-cut chances.
In the second half, the Warriors increased the tempo, pinning Rivers United to their own half and limiting the visitors to counterattacks that the home defense managed well.
The home side appeared to have taken the lead in the 55th minute when Rivers United goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena spilled a shot, and Suraj Lawal tapped in the rebound. However, the First Assistant Referee raised the flag for offside, sparking frustration among the home bench and fans.
Despite further opportunities for the Warriors, the visitors went ahead against the run of play. Ubong Friday launched a counterattack that the Warriors’ defense could not stop, and substitute Maclyn Biokpo Jenewari capitalized to score in the 86th minute.
Rivers United’s bench celebrated, believing they had secured all three points—only for Suraj Lawal to rise highest and head home Jubrin Faiz’s delivery for the equalizer four minutes into added time, rescuing a point for the home team.
