Super Six Cast Confirmed as Sunshine Queens and Osun Babes Relegated from NWFL

Posted : 07 May 2026

The 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership regular season reached a dramatic conclusion on Wednesday. While several teams celebrated qualification for the Super Six playoffs, others faced the heartbreak of relegation. Sunshine Queens and Osun Babes were among the high-profile casualties dropping to the second tier despite their best efforts on the final day. The results across nine venues settled the final standings and set the stage for the upcoming championship tournament.

In Group B, Robo Queens secured the top spot with a 2-1 victory over Nasarawa Amazons in Lagos. Former Madrid CF forward Opeyemi Ajakaye opened the scoring before Oluwakemi Adegbuyi doubled the advantage. Although the visitors pulled one back late in the second half, Robo Queens held on to maintain a perfect home record. Nasarawa Amazons had already secured their playoff spot alongside Abia Angels, who suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ahudiyannem Queens.

The relegation battle in Group B saw Sunshine Queens exit the top flight despite a 2-0 win over Confluence Queens. Goals from Lolade Akintunde and Bunmi Adenuga were not enough to save the Akure-based side. Osun Babes also suffered the drop after a heavy 3-0 defeat against Delta Queens in Asaba. Titilayo Aweda was the star of that encounter, scoring a brace early in the first half to seal Osun's fate.

Group A leaders Bayelsa Queens suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Ekiti Queens but still finished the season at the summit. Defending champions Edo Queens boosted their confidence with a 2-1 win over rivals Rivers Angels in Benin City. Atume Doosuur scored the opener for Edo Queens, finishing the regular season as the league's top scorer with 12 goals. Both teams had already secured their places in the Super Six long before the final whistle.

The bottom of Group A saw Pacesetter Queens and Naija Ratels relegated after a 1-1 draw in Ibadan. Both sides struggled throughout the campaign and finished 11 points adrift of safety. The Super Six lineup now consists of Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, and Rivers Angels from Group A. They are joined by Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Abia Angels from Group B. These six teams will now compete for the league title and a ticket to the WAFU B Champions League.
