Super Falcons Target Quarter-final Berth in Decisive Clash Against Egypt

Defending champions Nigeria will be aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) when they face Egypt in their final Group C match on Wednesday.

The Super Falcons revived their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia after suffering a shock opening defeat to tournament debutants Malawi, leaving qualification for the knockout stage firmly within their grasp.

A win against Egypt would significantly strengthen Nigeria's chances of advancing as they continue their quest to retain the continental title and book a place at the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Although Egypt have endured a difficult campaign, losing 6-0 to Zambia before falling 3-1 to group leaders Malawi, the Nigerian camp is taking nothing for granted in the decisive encounter.

Head Coach Justin Madugu will, however, be without two key players after defender Tosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini were ruled out through suspension.

Demehin received a red card during Nigeria's victory over Zambia after bringing down Barbra Banda, while Echegini accumulated two yellow cards in the team's opening two matches.

The suspensions are expected to force changes to the starting line-up, with Christy Ucheibe likely to partner experienced defender Osinachi Ohale in central defence after impressing following Demehin's dismissal in the previous game.

In midfield, captain Rasheedat Ajibade is expected to continue her influential role alongside Toni Payne and possibly Halimatu Ayinde as Madugu reshuffles his squad for the crucial fixture.

Up front, Uchenna Kanu, who scored in the defeat to Malawi, is pushing for a starting place alongside Asisat Oshoala, whose goal against Zambia restored Nigeria's hopes of progressing from the group.

With a place in the last eight at stake, the Super Falcons will be looking to build on their improved performance against Zambia and finish the group stage on a winning note against the North Africans.

Nigeria will be hoping to overcome the absence of key players by producing another disciplined display in their quest for a place in the knockout stage. A positive result against Egypt would keep the defending champions on course to retain their WAFCON crown.
