Forwards Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo scored first-half goals to give reigning African champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons a 2-0 victory over Bénin Republic’s Amazons in the first leg of their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixture in Lomé, Togo.
The Super Falcons started strongly, with Rasheedat Ajibade’s 6th-minute lob over the Amazons’ goalkeeper Ogoun striking the woodwork, while Folashade Ijamilusi’s effort two minutes later was parried away by Ogoun.
The Beninese side struggled to maintain their low-block game plan as Deborah Abiodun weaved through a congested midfield and delivered a precise pass to Chinwendu Ihezuo, who expertly slotted the ball past Ogoun in the 23rd minute to give Nigeria the lead.
Nigeria dominated possession and controlled all areas of the game. The Amazons had their first sight of goal in the 36th minute when Moumouni received a byline pass and beat Osinachi Ohale to strike, only to be denied by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Deborah Abiodun was once again instrumental as she found Esther Okoronkwo with a defense-splitting pass, allowing Okoronkwo to double Nigeria’s lead just before halftime. The Super Falcons were fortunate not to concede in the closing stages of the first half, as Moumouni’s shot struck the post.
The second half proved challenging for both teams due to tactical adjustments and multiple substitutions. Nigeria managed the pressure effectively, containing the pace of the Amazon wingers, who were searching for goals.
In the 90th minute, an in-swinger unsettled the Nigerian defense, giving Sadikou a chance to score, but her header was brilliantly saved by Nnadozie.
The 2-0 scoreline gives Nigeria a significant advantage ahead of the return leg at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
