Super Falcons Suffer Historic WAFCON Setback as Malawi Stun Champions

Nigeria's Super Falcons suffered one of the biggest upsets in Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) history on Tuesday night, falling 3-2 to tournament debutants Malawi in their Group C opener at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.

The defeat ended the 10-time African champions' winning start to the competition and leaves them under pressure ahead of a crucial encounter against Zambia.

The Super Falcons controlled much of the first half and created several goalscoring opportunities but failed to convert their dominance into goals as both teams went into the break level.

Malawi came alive in the closing stages, with Temwa Chawinga breaking the deadlock in the 73rd minute before her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the lead six minutes later to put the debutants firmly in control.

Nigeria responded in the 90th minute when captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit.

However, Temwa Chawinga struck again six minutes into stoppage time to restore Malawi's two-goal advantage and effectively seal a famous victory.

Substitute Uchenna Kanu pulled another goal back for Nigeria in the ninth minute of added time after connecting with a headed pass from the right, but the late rally proved insufficient as Malawi held on for a memorable 3-2 victory.

The result handed the Scorchers their first-ever win at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations and one of the most significant victories in the nation's football history.

Nigeria must now regroup quickly ahead of Saturday's decisive Group C clash against Zambia, who sent a strong warning to their rivals by thrashing Egypt 6-0 in the group's other fixture.

The Super Falcons will need a positive result against the Copper Queens to revive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage of the tournament. A victory would put Nigeria back in contention, while another defeat would leave the nine-time champions facing an early exit from the competition.
