Super Falcons Stars Shine Abroad with Domestic Trophy Triumphs in Portugal, Mexico, and Australia

Posted : 19 May 2026

Nigerian women football stars made the nation proud over the weekend by securing major silverwares across three different continents. Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe led the way in Europe; she helped Benfica Feminino secure the Taça de Portugal Feminina trophy on Sunday. The Portuguese giants defeated rivals FC Porto 2–0 during a historic final match at Jamor.

The intense clash marked the very first women's "O Clássico" fixture between the two sides. Benfica took total control of the match in the opening half as Caroline Møller scored a brilliant brace with goals in the 4th and 40th minutes. Ucheibe put up a solid defensive performance after the halftime break to protect the lead; the win sealed a magnificent domestic double following their Liga BPI title triumph.

In North America, Super Falcons defender Chidinma Okeke celebrated her maiden championship title with Mexican side Club América Femenil. Her team defeated CF Monterrey Femenil 3–1 on aggregate to claim the coveted Clausura 2026 title. Club América successfully overturned a 1–0 first-leg deficit by staging a dominant 3–0 victory in the reverse fixture: this win effectively ended their painful run of four consecutive final defeats.

Meanwhile, Nigerian forward Chinaza Uchendu lifted the Ninja A-League Women's championship title with Australian outfit Melbourne City FC. The victory marks a historic fifth domestic championship trophy for the Melbourne club. Uchendu missed the business end of the season due to a domestic suspension; however, her vital contributions during the regular league season proved instrumental to the team's successful campaign.

The weekend was not completely perfect for all Nigerian international players based in Europe. Super Falcons star Jennifer Echegini started for Paris Saint-Germain Féminine in their narrow 1–0 loss against Paris FC. The high-stakes match was part of the Arkema Première Ligue play-off semi-finals. Fellow Nigerian star Rasheedat Ajibade also came off the substitute bench for PSG; however, a decisive goal from former player Hawa Sangaré sent Paris FC through to the grand finale.
