The 25,000-capacity Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo, will host the first leg of the final qualifying fixture for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Friday, as 10-time champions Nigeria face the Benin Republic’s Amazons. The Super Falcons are determined to secure a convincing win that would make Tuesday’s return leg in Nigeria a mere formality.
Head Coach Justine Madugu confirmed that 19 players are available for the clash and expressed confidence that his team will deliver a strong performance capable of earning them a ticket to defend their continental title, which they won earlier this year in Morocco.
“The team is ready to go out there and make the nation proud,” Madugu said. “Of course, we would have loved to have Jennifer Echegini with us, but unfortunately, she’s unavailable. We wish her a quick recovery. On Friday, we’ll focus on our game plan and aim for the goals that will put us in a strong position for the second leg.”
With Echegini ruled out due to injury, Madugu is expected to field US-based midfielder Deborah Abiodun alongside captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe in the midfield. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, widely regarded as one of the best in the world, will lead a defensive lineup featuring Michelle Alozie, Tosin Demehin, Osinachi Ohale, and Ashleigh Plumptre.
In attack, the Falcons boast an impressive array of forwards, including Asisat Oshoala, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Joy Omewa, and Folashade Ijamilusi, who all played key roles in Nigeria’s tenth WAFCON triumph in Morocco.
The match will kick off at 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. Nigerian time), with Gambian referee Ngum Fatou officiating the contest.
The Kingdom of Morocco will host the 2026 Women’s AFCON, where all four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
