Super Falcons Rise to 36th in FIFA Rankings to Maintain African Dominance

Posted : 22 April 2026

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have climbed one spot to 36th in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. This move sees the team improve on their 37th-place finish from December 2025. They continue to lead all African nations on the global stage.

The ranking update follows a series of high-profile pre-WAFCON friendly matches against Cameroon. Nigeria experienced a mixed set of results during these encounters. They suffered a slim 1-0 defeat in February but bounced back with a convincing 3-1 victory in March.

In the second match against Cameroon, forward Chinwendu Ihezuo scored a vital equalizer in the 32nd minute. Rinsola Babajide provided the assist before scoring herself just before the halftime whistle. Michelle Alozie added a third goal in the 64th minute to secure the win.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade played a pivotal role in the victory by providing the cross for the final goal. This performance helped Nigeria gain 3.35 ranking points. Their total now stands at 1602 points as they prepare for upcoming continental challenges.

Nigeria remains comfortably ahead of their nearest continental rivals in the standings. South Africa currently occupies the 58th position, while Ghana and Morocco follow at 59th and 62nd respectively. The Falcons have held the top spot in Africa for several consecutive ranking cycles.

On the global front, world champions Spain retain their position as the number one team. The United States, England, Germany, and Japan round out the top five. Nigeria’s rise suggests they are narrowing the gap with the world's elite programs.

The Super Falcons’ technical staff expressed satisfaction with the team’s resilience following the initial loss to Cameroon. These friendlies serve as crucial preparation for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The team aims to maintain this momentum to secure their 11th continental title.

The latest rankings confirm Nigeria’s status as a powerhouse in women's football. With key players performing well in European leagues, the squad looks poised for further growth. Fans expect the team to break into the global top 30 by the end of the year.
