Fabulous Super Falcons Star Onome Ebi Retires from Football

Posted : 18 September 2025

Nigeria’s longest-serving Super Falcons defender, Onome Ebi, has officially announced her retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious career spanning more than two decades.

The 41-year-old shared the news on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, writing:

“Today, I officially retire from professional football. The journey has been filled with challenges, victories, and lessons that shaped me into who I am today. Though I hang up my boots, my purpose in the game continues — to give back, to guide, and to be a voice for players.”

Ebi made history as the first African footballer — male or female — to appear in six FIFA World Cup tournaments (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023). She also represented Nigeria at multiple Olympic Games and was a cornerstone of the Super Falcons’ defense across generations.

At continental level, she won four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles (2010, 2014, 2016, 2018) and featured in a record-equalling six editions. Ebi also earned over 100 caps for Nigeria, joining the country’s elite list of international centurions.

Her club career took her across the globe, with stints in Nigeria, Sweden, Turkey, Belarus, China, and Spain. She won league titles with FC Minsk in Belarus and became one of Nigeria’s most-travelled female professionals, blazing a trail for younger talents to follow.

Tributes have poured in from fans, teammates, and football authorities, celebrating her as a trailblazer, leader, and role model.

Although retiring from active play, Ebi has pledged to remain involved in football through mentorship and advocacy, focusing on amplifying the voices of players across Africa.

Her exit marks the end of an era for the Super Falcons, but her legacy as a pioneer and champion of Nigerian football will endure for generations.
