Super Falcons Handed Major WAFCON Boost As Esther Okoronkwo Resumes Training

Posted : 11 June 2026

The preparation of Nigeria's Super Falcons for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations has received a massive lift. Prolific forward Esther Okoronkwo has returned to full training after recovering from an injury layoff. The clinical left-footed attacker had spent several weeks on the sidelines due to a meniscus tear.

The 29-year-old forward sustained the knee injury in May while playing for her Canadian club side, AFC Toronto, during a league match against Halifax Women. The unfortunate setback subsequently forced her out of Nigeria's recent international double-header friendly fixtures against Senegal. However, the forward took to social media to confirm her successful rehabilitation and fitness update.

Okoronkwo expressed her excitement on her official account, posting: "Back on my feet. Mission en route." Her timely return will bring tremendous relief to head coach Justine Madugu and his technical crew. The Super Falcons are fine-tuning their tactical strategies to defend their continental crown later this summer.

The highly anticipated tournament is scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 16, 2026. Okoronkwo was the indisputable talisman for the national team during the previous edition. She registered two vital goals and provided seven assists to help Nigeria secure a historic tenth African title.

The technical crew will now monitor her progression closely at club level to ensure she regains optimum match sharpness. Nigeria remains the most successful women's football team on the continent. The squad will head to Morocco with the singular objective of maintaining their firm grip on African women's football.
