Super Falcons Defeat Ghana 3–1 in Final WAFCON Warm-Up Match

Posted : 30 June 2025

Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a morale-boosting 3–1 victory over West African rivals Ghana on Sunday in Casablanca, rounding off their preparations for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in style.

The encounter, held at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium, showcased the Falcons’ attacking intent and tactical discipline as they overcame a spirited Ghanaian side.

The match started evenly, but Nigeria drew first blood with a sharp finish from Asisat Oshoala, capitalizing on a defensive lapse. Ghana responded just before halftime through Vivian Konadu, who converted a well-worked move to level the scores at 1–1.

Nigeria turned up the tempo in the second half, regaining the lead through Rasheedat Ajibade, who nodded home from a well-delivered corner. The result was sealed by substitute Ifeoma Onumonu, who beat her marker and curled in a stunning third goal to put the game beyond reach.

Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, especially their response after conceding:

“It was important to finish on a strong note. The players showed great character, and this gives us confidence heading into the tournament.”

Ghana’s head coach Nora Häuptle acknowledged the result but praised her team’s fighting spirit, emphasizing the value of facing top-tier opposition before WAFCON.

Nigeria will now shift focus to their WAFCON Group B opener against Tunisia on July 5 in Casablanca. With this win, the nine-time African champions will be brimming with confidence as they seek to reclaim continental glory.
