Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked their place in the next round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics women’s football qualifiers after thrashing Comoros 5-0 in Tuesday’s second leg at Ikenne to complete a commanding 7-0 aggregate triumph.
The victory sets up a meeting with Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses as Nigeria continue their quest for a place at the Olympic Games.
Having won the first leg 2-0, the Super Falcons approached the return fixture with confidence, although their early dominance did not immediately translate into goals.
Gift Monday missed an opportunity to open the scoring in the ninth minute after breaking through on goal but failing to get past the Comoros goalkeeper.
Nigeria suffered a major concern in the 28th minute when captain Rasheedat Ajibade was forced off following a heavy collision, with Folashade Ijamilusi introduced as her replacement.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 41st minute after Uchenna Kanu capitalised on a goalkeeping error, intercepting the ball before setting up Toni Payne to score from close range.
Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen introduced Blessing Okpe for Monday at half-time, and the substitution helped Nigeria increase the pressure after the restart.
Kanu doubled the advantage in the 58th minute, heading home an accurate cross from Ijamilusi, who continued to trouble the Comoros defence with her deliveries.
Although Kanu had another effort ruled out for offside three minutes later, Nigeria maintained their attacking momentum and added a third in the 63rd minute.
Okpe supplied the assist after beating two defenders on the flank before cutting the ball back for Payne to complete her brace.
Ijamilusi then recorded her second assist in the 66th minute, delivering another cross that Kanu converted with a header to register her second goal of the match.
The Super Falcons completed the scoring in the 71st minute when Okpe was fouled inside the penalty area. Christy Ucheibe calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to make it 5-0 on the night.
Eguavoen subsequently introduced fresh legs, with Suliat Abideen and Shakirat Moshood replacing Echegini and Kanu in the 81st minute, before Fatimah Soliat came on for Payne four minutes from time.
The comprehensive victory underlined Nigeria’s attacking strength and secured progression to the next qualifying round, where the Super Falcons will face Morocco in a potentially tougher test of their Olympic ambitions.
