Super Falcons Begin WAFCON Title Defence Against Ambitious Malawi

Defending champions Nigeria will launch the defence of their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Tuesday when they face tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

The Super Falcons enter the competition determined to retain the trophy they dramatically reclaimed last year after coming from behind to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final.

While Nigeria remain overwhelming favourites, Head Coach Justine Madugu has warned against complacency, insisting that every team at the tournament deserves respect.

"We have huge respect for all our opponents," Madugu said during Monday's pre-match press conference.

"Every team that qualifies for this tournament deserves commendation and respect. Yes, they are debutants, but they are a very good side. We don't take anything for granted because every team has a purpose and a mission.

"We are here to defend our WAFCON title. The players are fully prepared, and we will remain focused on our game plan."

Nigeria will be aiming to make an early statement in Group A, particularly after hosts Morocco opened the tournament with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Kenya, signalling their determination to reclaim the title after finishing runners-up in the last two editions.

Despite making their first appearance at the finals, Malawi possess enough quality to trouble the reigning champions, particularly through sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, whose pace and attacking ability make them the team's biggest threats.

Coach Lovemore Fazili's side also boasts experienced players, including defenders Ireen Khumalo, Olivia Phikani and Benadetta Mkandawire, midfielders Rose Kadzere, Letticia Chinyamula and Faith Chinzimu, as well as forwards Vanessa Chikupira and Deborah Henry.

The Scorchers earned their place at the tournament after an impressive qualifying campaign and have shown encouraging form despite recent friendly defeats to Morocco and Ghana. They also held Zambia to a draw before comfortably overcoming Angola in the qualifiers.

Nigeria are expected to rely on captain Rasheedat Ajibade to inspire the team, alongside goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defenders Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, Rofiat Imuran and Tosin Demehin, midfielders Deborah Abiodun and Halimatu Ayinde, and forwards Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Asisat Oshoala.

Madugu also has enviable depth on the bench, with the likes of Toni Payne, Jennifer Echegini, Gift Monday, Omorinsola Babajide and Folashade Ijamilusi available to influence the contest if required.

Victory over Malawi would hand the Super Falcons the ideal start to their title defence and reinforce their status as favourites to lift a record-extending continental crown.

The opening fixture presents Nigeria with an opportunity to set the tone for the rest of the tournament as they pursue another successful WAFCON campaign. A positive result against Malawi would strengthen their confidence and underline their ambition of retaining the continental title.
