Super Falcons Begin WAFCON Preparations with Historic Victory Over Senegal

The Super Falcons began their preparations for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on a winning note, defeating Senegal's Teranga Lionesses 2-1 in an international friendly at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.

The encounter provided Head Coach Justine Madugu with an early opportunity to assess his squad ahead of the continental showpiece in Morocco, and two returning stars made immediate impacts with decisive contributions.

After a balanced opening period, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when experienced forward Asisat Oshoala calmly converted from the penalty spot.

The goal marked a memorable return for the former African Women's Footballer of the Year, who was making her first Super Falcons appearance since the 2024 WAFCON final.

Buoyed by the opener, the nine-time African champions increased their attacking intensity and were rewarded again before halftime.

Toni Payne, also returning to the national team after an extended absence, capped a flowing attacking move with a composed finish in the 43rd minute to double Nigeria's advantage.

The Falcons dominated large portions of the contest, enjoying superior possession and controlling the tempo of play.

Their defensive organisation also restricted Senegal's attacking threats for much of the game, allowing the hosts to manage proceedings comfortably.

Senegal, however, ensured a tense finish when they reduced the deficit in the 86th minute. The late goal sparked renewed belief among the visitors, but Nigeria remained composed and successfully protected their lead until the final whistle.

Beyond the result, the match carried historic significance as the first-ever meeting between the two nations at senior women's level.

For Nigeria, it was an encouraging performance that highlighted the value of experience within the squad, with returning players immediately making their presence felt.

The two teams will meet again on June 8 at the same venue for a second friendly fixture as both sides continue their preparations for the upcoming WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
