Head coach Justine Madugu has affirmed that champions Nigeria expect a challenging match against the Amazons of Bénin Republic in Abeokuta on Tuesday and will take nothing for granted against their western neighbors.
The 10-time champions hold control of the tie after a 2-0 win in the first leg away from home, courtesy of goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo. However, Madugu is wary that the Amazons could arrive better prepared than they were in the first leg at the Stade Kégué in Lomé on Friday.
“We are looking forward to a tough game from the Beninoise, but we will be ready by putting up a strong performance with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s AFCON, where we hope to retain our title and further secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup in Brazil,” Madugu said.
“The Amazons, with about 10 professional players from Germany, Morocco, France, and Equatorial Guinea, gave a good account of themselves in the first leg, underscoring that underrating any African team could be perilous. We are not taking anything for granted and will go all out for victory.”
The Super Falcons are expected to field the same squad that featured in the first leg, with Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tosin Demehin, and Ashley Plumptre in defense, and Rasheedat Ajibade, Deborah Abiodun, and Taiwo Afolabi controlling midfield. Up front, Ihezuo, Okoronkwo, and Folashade Ijamilusi are likely to lead the attack, with options including six-time Africa Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala, Joy Omewa, and Kafayat Mafisere.
The second-leg encounter will kick off at 4pm at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta, with the winner on aggregate earning a ticket to the 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be hosted by Morocco from 17th March to 3rd April 2026.
