Super Eagles seek Unity Cup statement against Zimbabwe

Posted : 26 May 2026

The stage is set for another fierce showdown between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Zimbabwe’s Warriors as both sides prepare to face off in Tuesday’s opening fixture of the 2026 Unity Cup in London.

Nigeria held their official training session on Monday evening at the Charlton Athletic Stadium, with Head Coach Eric Chelle overseeing preparations ahead of the highly anticipated encounter.

Twenty players participated in the session as the Super Eagles fine-tuned tactics and fitness for the clash against a Zimbabwean side that proved difficult to break down during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The two nations played out identical 1-1 draws in both qualifying meetings, first in Huye, Rwanda, and later in Uyo, underlining the growing rivalry and competitiveness between the teams.

Coach Chelle will be banking on the experience of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, alongside Arthur Okonkwo and home-based shot-stopper Michael Atata, to provide stability at the back.

In defence, the Eagles boast a blend of local and foreign-based talent including Igoh Ogbu, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Elias Ochobi, and Chibueze Oputa, while the midfield will rely on the energy and creativity of Alhassan Yusuf, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Samson Tijani.

Nigeria’s attacking department also looks promising with Terem Moffi expected to lead the line alongside Philip Otele, Rafiu Durosinmi, Owen Oseni, and Femi Azeez.

The Unity Cup fixture is expected to deliver excitement and intensity as both African sides aim to gain momentum in the four-nation tournament, which also features Jamaica and India.

A victory for the Super Eagles would not only boost confidence under Chelle but also send a strong message to the other contenders in the competition.

With an experimental squad packed with hungry debutants and determined domestic league standouts, the West Africans hold a unique opportunity to lay down an early marker. As kickoff approaches at The Valley, both teams stand ready to reignite their historic rivalry in a captivating quest for continental dominance on British soil.
