The Confederation of African Football has officially placed Nigeria's Super Eagles in Pot 1 ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification draw. The official seeding release list was published by the continent's governing body on Monday evening. The high-stakes draw ceremony will take place at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
The Pot 1 placement ensures that the three-time African champions will avoid the continent's highest-ranked heavyweights during the initial group stage. Nigeria finds themselves seeded alongside reigning regional powerhouses including Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Algeria. Other elite footballing nations occupying the top pot are Tunisia, South Africa, Cameroon, DR Congo, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
A total of 48 participating countries have been divided across four distinct pots based entirely on the latest official FIFA rankings. Powerhouses Ghana and Cape Verde both missed out on Pot 1 status; instead, they headline a highly competitive Pot 2. This setup creates a scenario where Nigeria could still potentially draw a difficult second-seeded opponent in their ultimate qualification group path.
The upcoming qualification campaign features a complex regulatory format designed by tournament organisers. CAF will distribute the 48 nations into 12 distinct groups consisting of four teams each; the top two sides will normally progress. However, East African neighbors Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have already earned automatic qualification slots as the historic tournament co-hosts.
The trio will still participate in the active qualifiers to secure vital competitive match practice before the main tournament kicks off. Consequently, only one separate nation will qualify from any group that features a co-host country. The entire qualification series will be played across three dedicated international windows between September 2026 and March 2027.
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has arrived in Cairo after receiving an official invitation from CAF organizers. The veteran central defender will actively assist with the live draw proceedings as a special guest coordinator. He will stand alongside legendary African football icons Essam El Hadary, Max-Alain Gradel, and Trésor Mputu during the televised event.
