Super Eagles receive N1M per goal pledge from Nigeria's Pillar of Sport

Posted : 13 February 2024

The Nigeria Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike JP, has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria despite their 1-2 loss to the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire in the final match of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, played at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday.

The Chairman of the Office of the Nigeria Pillar of Sports (ONPS), Prince Ajide Olayioye, stated that the Super Eagles performed to the best of their abilities. The team lost the final match 2-1 to the host in a keenly contested game.

This year's edition of the competition has been adjudged by soccer aficionados as the best in recent years in terms of officiating, competitiveness, and organization.

The Anambra-born sports philanthropist, Chief Ejidike, while lamenting the team's inability to overcome their hosts, praised them for what he described as an all-round gritty and tactical performance. He mentioned that very few people gave the team a pre-tournament chance of making it beyond the second round. Despite the negative predictions, the team reached the final undefeated until the last match.

Chief Ejidike, the Patron of "The Nigerian Football Supporters Club" (NFSC), also fulfilled his pledge of giving the team ₦1 million for every goal scored in the final match against the Ivoriens. He made this promise as motivation immediately after the team secured the final ticket following their semi-final victory over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa last Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the team could not score more than one goal, courtesy of William Troost-Ekong's header in the first half. On Monday, the money was wired to the team's captain Ahmed Musa, who acknowledged receipt and thanked the Pillar of Sports on behalf of the entire Super Eagles team.

Ejidike encourages the boys not to be discouraged by the outcome of the final match against Cote d'Ivoire and urges them to focus on the remaining World Cup qualifying matches to ensure that the team does not miss out on the train to the next World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA in 2026.
