Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a spirited second-half comeback to force Russia to a 3–3 draw in an entertaining international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.
Despite going into the encounter with a depleted squad, Nigeria showed character and resilience, recovering from a 3–1 deficit to salvage a draw against the hosts.
Head Coach Éric Chelle used the encounter to assess the depth of his squad, handing international debuts to nine players in a heavily rotated lineup.
Only Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, Benjamin Fredricks, Emmanuel Fernandez, Abdullahi Bewene and Aderemi Adeoye had previously represented the senior national team among Nigeria’s starters.
The Super Eagles made a bright start and took the lead in the 11th minute through Iheanacho.
The forward received a precise pass from Bewene on the edge of the box before unleashing a powerful left-footed effort into the top corner for his 15th international goal.
Russia, however, responded strongly after Nigeria’s early advantage, exploiting lapses in the Nigerian defence to level the contest against debutant goalkeeper Samuel James.
The hosts then completed the turnaround shortly before halftime to take a 2–1 lead into the break.
Russia stretched their advantage nine minutes after the restart, leaving Nigeria facing a two-goal deficit and forcing Chelle to make changes in an attempt to alter the course of the game.
The substitutions immediately added greater urgency to the Super Eagles’ attacking play.
Umar Abdullahi almost reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute after winning possession high up the pitch following good work from Isaac James.
Five minutes later, Nigeria were back in the contest through another debutant, Peter Edokpolor.
The 19-year-old showed impressive composure and determination, powering through the Russian defence before unleashing an unstoppable effort in the 78th minute to reduce the deficit to 3–2.
With the momentum shifting in Nigeria’s favour, Chelle introduced Vince Osuji for Chibuzo Nwoko in the 83rd minute as the Super Eagles continued to press for an equaliser.
Their persistence finally paid off deep into stoppage time.
Emmanuel Fernandez launched a quick counter-attack with a header from deep, finding Abdullahi, who intelligently squared the ball for fellow substitute Akor Adams to finish in the 94th minute and complete Nigeria’s dramatic comeback.
The late equaliser capped a performance in which Nigeria demonstrated considerable fighting spirit despite the inexperience of the lineup.
The friendly also provided valuable exposure for the younger members of the squad, with nine players earning their first senior international caps on the night.
For Chelle, the 3–3 result offered both positives and lessons, particularly as the Super Eagles continue to build squad depth ahead of more competitive assignments.
