Super Eagles outclass Jamaica to retain Unity Cup title

Posted : 31 May 2026

Nigeria successfully defended their Unity Cup title with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Jamaica's Reggae Boyz at The Valley Stadium in London on Saturday, underlining their superiority throughout the Afro-Caribbean football tournament.

The Super Eagles produced a commanding display from start to finish, overwhelming the hosts with their pace, organization, and attacking quality to secure a record fourth Unity Cup triumph.

Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi emerged as the star of the evening, scoring twice to cap an outstanding tournament, while stand-in captain Terem Moffi added the other goal as Nigeria completed a flawless title defence.

The Nigerians wasted little time asserting themselves, taking the lead in just the fourth minute. A long throw from Kenneth Igboke caused confusion in the Jamaican penalty area, and Abdullahi reacted quickest to goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke's punched clearance to fire home the opener.

Buoyed by the early breakthrough, Eric Chelle's men dominated possession and dictated the tempo, leaving Jamaica struggling to establish any rhythm. The Reggae Boyz managed a rare sight of goal in the eighth minute, but goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo comfortably dealt with a header from Brown following a cross by Kaheim Dixon.

Nigeria continued to threaten and nearly doubled their advantage ten minutes before halftime when Rafiu Durosinmi was released on a swift counterattack, only for Boyce-Clarke to deny the striker with a timely save.

The Super Eagles maintained their intensity after the break and were rewarded in the 57th minute. Femi Azeez delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, and Moffi rose highest to head beyond the Jamaican goalkeeper for Nigeria's second goal.

With confidence flowing, the Eagles continued to create opportunities. Azeez almost got on the scoresheet himself from a dangerous free-kick, but Boyce-Clarke produced another impressive stop to keep the scoreline respectable.

However, Jamaica's resistance finally collapsed deep into stoppage time. Philip Otele capitalized on a loose ball in midfield before releasing Abdullahi, who calmly finished from an angle to complete his brace and seal a convincing victory.

Coach Chelle made only one change from the side that defeated Zimbabwe in the semi-final, replacing Philip Otele with Durosinmi, and the decision paid off as Nigeria delivered another cohesive and disciplined performance.

Having retained the Unity Cup in style, the Super Eagles will now turn their attention to an international friendly against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on June 3 as preparations continue for future competitive assignments.

The dominant 3-0 victory highlights the squad's readiness and tactical growth under Coach Chelle. Fans can look forward to seeing if the team maintains this winning momentum during their upcoming trip to Europe.
