The Super Eagles and their officials left Nizhny Novgorod immediately after Tuesday’s 3-3 draw against Russia, ending their brief stay in the Russian city. The Nigerian delegation travelled to Moscow after the match before members of the team continued to their respective destinations.
Nigeria had produced a dramatic comeback at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Super Eagles the lead in the 10th minute before Russia scored three goals to take control of the contest.
Nigeria responded strongly after the interval. Peter Edokpolor pulled one goal back in the 78th minute before Akor Adams struck in stoppage time to secure a share of the spoils.
The late equaliser brought an eventful night to an end for Éric Chelle's team. Despite the result, the Nigerian contingent did not spend another night in Nizhny Novgorod.
The team's media officer confirmed the immediate movement from the city after the match. The players and officials travelled to Moscow, where members of the delegation were scheduled to continue to their various bases.
The quick departure also brought Nigeria's October international engagement to a close. Chelle used the friendly to assess several players as he continues to develop his squad and examine alternative options ahead of more important assignments.
Iheanacho's early goal provided a positive moment on his return to the national team. Edokpolor also made an impact by scoring after coming off the bench, while Adams completed the comeback with his late equaliser.
However, Nigeria's defensive display remains a concern. The Super Eagles conceded three goals after taking the lead, although their response in the second half prevented another defeat following the 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau in their previous outing.
The 3-3 result therefore gave Chelle valuable information about his players. The coach will now have to address the defensive issues exposed against Russia while assessing the performances of the new faces introduced during the international window.
