Nigeria Set to Resume Training Ahead of World Cup Qualifier Against Benin
Nigeria’s delegation to Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho in Polokwane, South Africa, safely returned to the country on Sunday morning, landing at the Obong Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, at 8:05 a.m.
The team’s return journey faced a brief scare when a cracked pilot windscreen forced the chartered ValueJet Airline aircraft to return to Luanda Airport just 25 minutes after takeoff, following a refueling stop in the Angolan capital on Saturday afternoon.
Thanks to the swift intervention of ValueJet Airline and Federal Government authorities, another aircraft was dispatched from Lagos to pick up the team in Luanda. The replacement flight took two hours and 20 minutes to reach Uyo safely.
Upon arrival, players and officials checked into the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot-Ekpene, with training scheduled for 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Meanwhile, Group C leaders, the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, who will face Nigeria on Tuesday, arrived in Uyo on Saturday afternoon and are lodged at the Ibom Icon and Golf Resort. The team held a light training session on Sunday morning at the practice pitch of the same stadium.
The Cheetahs are expected to have their official training session on the main pitch at 5 p.m. on Monday, followed by the Super Eagles at 6:15 p.m.
The much-anticipated Group C encounter, involving two of the top contenders for the group’s sole automatic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals in North America, will kick off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Simultaneously, South Africa will face Rwanda in Nelspruit, another match that could shape the group’s final standings.
