Nigeria’s Super Eagles arrived in Bloemfontein on Sunday evening ahead of a pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana. The team received a rousing welcome from a delegation of top officials, sports administrators, and the Nigerian diaspora in South Africa.
The Nigerian delegation, led by High Commissioner to South Africa His Excellency Tope Ajayi and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Sir Adeyinka Adeboye, joined members of the National Sports Commission and the local Nigerian community in greeting the team. The chartered ValueJet flight carrying the squad and officials landed at Bloemfontein Airport at 6:25 pm South African time after a three-and-a-half-hour journey from Luanda, Angola, following a refuelling stop there from Uyo.
Among the officials present were NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, House of Representatives Sports Committee Chairman Kabiru Amadu, NFF Executive Committee members, former Nigerian captains Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba, and other stakeholders. The Nigerian community, led by president Smart Nwobi, turned out in impressive numbers, celebrating with music, drumming, and traditional attire.
The Super Eagles squad included 22 players along with technical and administrative staff. Victor Osimhen, sidelined due to an injury sustained in Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda, was the only notable absentee. The team is scheduled for official training at the Toyota Stadium on Monday at 6 pm South Africa time (5 pm Nigeria time).
