Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has shared the details of his missed opportunity to make history with Real Madrid. During the early 1990s, Adepoju was a standout performer for the club’s reserve side, Real Madrid Castilla. He recently disclosed that he was on the verge of a first-team promotion during the 1991/1992 season. The chance emerged when the senior team's star Mexican striker, Hugo Sánchez, suffered a significant injury.
The Madrid coaching staff viewed Adepoju as the ideal candidate to fill the void left by Sánchez. However, strict Spanish football regulations at the time limited clubs to just four non-Spanish players per squad. Real Madrid had already filled these slots with Sánchez, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Prosinečki, and Ricardo Rocha. Despite these constraints, the club intended to register Adepoju as an emergency replacement for the remainder of the campaign.
Fate intervened at the most critical moment when Adepoju suffered a severe shoulder injury during a match for Castilla. This physical setback made it impossible for him to join the senior squad as planned. He noted that the injury essentially closed the door on his dream of playing at the Santiago Bernabéu. A subsequent change in management the following season meant he was no longer a priority for the incoming coaching staff.
Adepoju eventually left the Spanish giants to join Racing Santander, where he helped the club secure promotion to La Liga. He finished his stint at Real Madrid Castilla with an impressive record of 27 goals in 67 appearances. To this day, no Nigerian international has ever played a competitive senior match for Los Blancos. Adepoju admitted that current football rules would have likely seen him promoted much earlier in his career.
Commonly known as "The Headmaster," Adepoju remains one of Nigeria's most decorated midfielders. He was a central figure in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory and featured in three FIFA World Cup tournaments. His most iconic moment came in 1998 when he scored a powerful header against Spain in a 3-2 victory. After 48 caps and six goals for the Super Eagles, he is still regarded as a pioneer for Nigerians in Spanish football.
