Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Hopes Hinge on Upcoming Matches After Draw with Bafana Bafana

Posted : 10 September 2025

Nigeria’s Super Eagles saw their path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals become increasingly challenging after a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The home side started the match at a blistering pace, testing Nigeria’s defensive wings. Early misfortune struck the Super Eagles when right wing-back Olaoluwa Aina suffered an injury in the eighth minute while attempting to challenge the Bafana defence. He was replaced by Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Striker Cyriel Dessers struggled to make an impact once again, failing to convert opportunities, dominate aerial duels, or energize Nigeria’s attack. The team’s morale dipped further when captain William Ekong inadvertently scored an own goal in the 25th minute, giving South Africa the lead and momentum.

However, Nigeria fought back before halftime. Defender Calvin Bassey drove forward and set up Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who squared the ball for Bassey to nod past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, leveling the score just before the break.

The second half saw few clear chances, despite promising opportunities from substitutes Tolu Arokodare and Dele-Bashiru. Neither side could find the winning goal, and the match ended in a stalemate.

With this draw, the Super Eagles now sit on 11 points from eight matches in Group C. Their next crucial qualifier is scheduled for 10 October, away against Lesotho at the same venue, where a win will be vital to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
