Chukwueze, Onyemaechi Miss as Super Eagles Lose 4–2 on Penalties to Morocco

Posted : 15 January 2026

Nigeria’s Super Eagles saw their Africa Cup of Nations title hopes end in heartbreak after a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco in a tense, goalless semi-final played on Wednesday night in Rabat.

After 120 minutes of disciplined but cautious football failed to separate the sides, Morocco held their nerve in the shootout, capitalizing on missed penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi to secure a place in the final.

The match was defined by defensive solidity and tactical caution, with both teams prioritizing structure over risk. Goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Yassine Bounou were largely untroubled but made key saves when called upon to maintain the scoreline.

Morocco dominated possession early, probing through Brahim Díaz and Adam Masina, while Achraf Hakimi came closest with a fierce free-kick that skimmed the crossbar. Nigeria relied on quick transitions, with Ademola Lookman forcing a save from Bounou shortly before halftime.

The second half mirrored the first, as clear-cut chances remained scarce. Raphael Onyedika tested Bounou, while Abde Ezzalzouli threatened for Morocco, with both teams increasingly cautious.

Extra time brought late drama but no breakthrough. Morocco struck the woodwork through Nayef Aguerd, while Nigeria struggled to create meaningful openings despite their defensive resilience.

The penalty shootout proved decisive. Nigeria were briefly given hope when Hamza Igamane’s spot-kick was saved by Nwabali, but Samuel Chukwueze missed Nigeria’s second attempt. Achraf Hakimi converted calmly to restore Morocco’s advantage, and when Bruno Onyemaechi missed Nigeria’s fourth penalty, Youssef En-Nesyri sealed a 4–2 victory with a powerful finish.

Morocco will now face defending champions Senegal in Sunday’s final as they aim to end a 48-year wait for continental glory. Nigeria will turn their focus to the third-place playoff against Egypt.
