Super Eagles Face Pharaohs in Cairo Friendly

Posted : 16 December 2025

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face Egypt’s Pharaohs in a crucial friendly match at the Cairo Stadium on Tuesday evening, ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

The game serves as an important warm-up for both teams as they prepare for the highly anticipated tournament, which kicks off in Morocco on Sunday.

The friendly offers an opportunity for both sides to test new players in a competitive setting.

Nigeria’s head coach Eric Sékou Chelle could give game time to several debutants, including goalkeeper Amas Obasogie, defender Ryan Alebiosu, midfielders Usman Muhammed, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, and forwards Paul Onuachu and Salim Fago Lawal.

For Egypt, AFCON legend Hossam Hassan—who was a joint top scorer in the 1998 edition—will likely focus his strategy on key players such as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Despite numerous individual trophies, Salah is still seeking his first AFCON title. Other prominent Pharaohs players include Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, Al Ahly’s Mohamed El-Shenawy, and Mahmoud Trezeguet, among others.

Chelle is expected to field a strong lineup for Nigeria, including goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defenders Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Zaidu Sanusi, midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, and Alex Iwobi, as well as forwards Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Osimhen, and Ademola Lookman.

The match kicks off at 8:00 PM Egypt time (7:00 PM Nigeria time). As of Monday afternoon, 17 players from Nigeria’s 28-man squad have arrived in Cairo, with more expected to join for the evening’s training session.

After the friendly, the Super Eagles will depart Cairo for the Moroccan city of Fès on Thursday. Nigeria’s AFCON journey begins on Tuesday, 23rd December, against Tanzania, in a repeat of the opening match of the 1980 tournament.

The Eagles will then face Tunisia on Saturday, 27th December, and Uganda on Tuesday, 30th December, all in Fès.

Meanwhile, Egypt will face South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe in Group B, with their matches scheduled at the Stade d’Agadir in Agadir.
