Super Eagles’ ‘Exciting’ Young Talent Pool Gives Durosinmi Hope for Revival

Posted : 31 October 2026

Super Eagles forward Rafiu Durosinmi has expressed confidence in Nigeria's emerging football talents, insisting that the country has enough quality players to rebuild the national team and restore its position among Africa's leading football nations.

The KRC Genk striker, who currently leads the Belgian Pro League scoring charts with six goals, believes Nigeria's recent struggles could eventually give way to a brighter period for the national team.

Durosinmi described the team's difficult period as "the storm before glory," maintaining that several young Nigerian players are ready to make their mark on the international stage.

"We are blessed with many talented young players, who are ready to answer the call," he said in an interview with The Guardian.

The 23-year-old also reflected on his own journey to the Super Eagles, describing his international debut during the Unity Cup as the fulfilment of a childhood ambition.

"Every footballer dreams of representing his country and getting the opportunity to wear Nigeria's badge at the Unity Cup was a dream come true," he said.

The striker added that he remains committed to contributing to the national team whenever called upon, regardless of the role assigned to him.

Durosinmi began his football journey in Irewe, a community in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State. He initially played football with friends before moving to the city to live with his sister, where he began taking his ambition of becoming a professional footballer more seriously.

He developed through Unique Football Academy and Box2Box FC before moving to Europe, where he played for MFK Karviná and Viktoria Plzeň in the Czech Republic.

He subsequently joined Italian side Pisa before securing a move to Belgian giants KRC Genk in July 2026.

His experience across different European leagues has helped him develop a better understanding of different playing styles and tactical demands.

According to the forward, football in the Czech Republic places considerable emphasis on physicality and intensity, while Italian football is more tactical and defensive.

He believes the Belgian league combines physical strength with a greater emphasis on technical football.

Durosinmi identified Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane and Didier Drogba as his childhood football role models. He explained that watching the three forwards influenced his development and understanding of the striker's position.

Despite his impressive start in Belgium, the Nigerian international has bigger ambitions. He wants to establish himself in one of Europe's leading leagues while continuing to improve his performances.

His arrival at Genk has already produced encouraging results. He has quickly become an important attacking option for the Belgian side, scoring six league goals in his first eight appearances of the 2026/27 campaign.

Genk secured his services from Pisa after his impressive performances in the Czech Republic, where he previously recorded 35 goals and 10 assists in 86 appearances for Viktoria Plzeň.

With his growing influence at club level, Durosinmi will hope to translate his scoring form into regular opportunities with the Super Eagles as Nigeria continues to rebuild its attacking options.
