Super Eagles Draw Confidence From AFCON History Ahead of 2027 Qualifiers

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will begin their journey toward the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with their impressive history providing a source of confidence. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

Nigeria's qualification campaign starts in September, with the Super Eagles drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania. Their opening fixture is against Madagascar on September 25, before they travel to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.

The Super Eagles have a strong record at the AFCON. Nigeria have won the competition three times, lifting the trophy in 1980, 1994 and 2013. The team has also reached the final on several occasions, establishing itself as one of Africa's most successful national sides.

Recent performances have strengthened that reputation. Nigeria reached the semi-finals at the 2019 AFCON, finished runners-up in 2023 and again reached the last four at the 2025 tournament. CAF statistics show that Nigeria contested a record-extending 16th AFCON semi-final at the 2025 edition.

The 2025 campaign was particularly significant because Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 in the quarter-finals before reaching the semi-finals. The Super Eagles' consistency in reaching the latter stages has kept them among the leading contenders whenever the continental championship arrives.

Coach Éric Chelle will now look to build on that foundation. The French tactician has the opportunity to develop greater depth by integrating emerging players from Nigeria's youth national teams while maintaining the experience and quality already available in the senior squad.

Consistency will remain one of the biggest challenges. Nigeria have regularly shown that they possess enough individual quality to compete with Africa's strongest teams, but maintaining that level across an entire tournament has sometimes proved difficult.

The qualifying campaign will provide Chelle with valuable competitive matches to develop his tactical approach. The Super Eagles must also avoid complacency against opponents who may adopt a defensive approach and look to frustrate Nigeria.

Nigeria's group contains three matches against Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania in the first two matchdays. The first two fixtures are scheduled between September 24 and October 6, while the remaining qualifying matches will be played during later FIFA international windows.

Beyond the coaching staff and players, preparations will also depend on the support provided by the Nigeria Football Federation and government authorities. Stable administration, timely logistics, proper training arrangements and player welfare will be important if Nigeria are to maximize their chances.

The Super Eagles have the talent and tournament pedigree to challenge for another continental crown. Their immediate task, however, is to negotiate Group L successfully and use the qualification campaign to build the consistency required to turn their historic record into a fourth AFCON title.
