Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Monitors Samson Tijani Ahead of 2026 Unity Cup Recall

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is closely monitoring former Golden Eaglets captain Samson Tijani. The 23-year-old midfielder is currently impressing with Czech top-flight side Dukla Prague. Reports suggest he is on the radar for a national team return during the 2026 Unity Cup. This invitational tournament is scheduled to take place in London later this month.

Tijani has successfully rebuilt his career in the Czech Republic after several difficult seasons. He previously struggled with long-term injuries during his tenure at Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg. Since joining Dukla Prague in 2025, the midfielder has become a vital part of their starting lineup. His consistent performances have caught the eye of the Super Eagles technical crew.

The midfielder first rose to prominence in 2019 when he captained Nigeria at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. He scored a memorable brace against Hungary during that tournament in Brazil. He earned his senior international debut in 2020 during a friendly against Algeria. However, fitness issues kept him on the fringes of the senior squad for several years.

Coach Eric Chelle recently indicated that the Unity Cup would serve as a scouting platform. He intends to use the London tournament to test fringe players and those performing well in Europe. This approach gives Tijani a fresh opportunity to secure a permanent spot in the national team. The coach wants to expand his midfield options before the next round of competitive assignments.

Nigeria heads into the Unity Cup as the defending champions after winning the 2025 edition. The team recently secured a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under Chelle's guidance. Including resurgent talents like Tijani is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the squad depth.

The official squad list for the London trip is expected to be released by next Friday. Tijani has publicly expressed his readiness to represent his country once again. He recently praised the tactical improvements made under Chelle and described the current team atmosphere as a family. A successful outing in London could cement his comeback to the international stage.
