Following their impressive showing at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have recorded a significant rise in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings.
The Super Eagles have climbed from fifth to third place in Africa, while retaining their 38th position globally in the January 2026 rankings. The continental rise reflects Nigeria’s strong performance at AFCON 2025, where they finished third overall and secured a bronze medal.
Nigeria now sits behind AFCON champions Senegal and runners-up Morocco, who are ranked 19th and 11th respectively in the global standings. Despite the progress on the continental scale, Nigeria’s global ranking remained unchanged, indicating stability rather than significant worldwide advancement.
Algeria and Egypt occupy fourth and fifth places in Africa, while DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa, Mali, and Tunisia complete the continent’s top 10.
Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked team globally, followed by Senegal, Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria in the continental hierarchy. Other African nations in the top 10 include Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, DR Congo, and Cameroon, all ranked between 41st and 57th globally.
On the global stage, Spain retained the top position, followed by Argentina and France, while England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Croatia round out the top 10.
Nigeria’s rise in Africa was driven by a strong AFCON campaign, highlighted by a 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt in the third-place match. The Super Eagles won six of their seven matches, including notable victories over Tunisia and Algeria, with their only defeat coming in the semi-final against hosts Morocco, decided by penalties.
However, despite the continental progress, Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup could impact their global ranking in future releases if positive results are not sustained.
