Super Eagles Captain Wilfred Ndidi Returns from Injury in Massive Boost for Eric Chelle

Posted : 24 April 2026

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle received positive news this week regarding the fitness of his captain. Wilfred Ndidi returned to the pitch for Besiktas on Thursday evening during a Turkish Cup quarterfinal fixture against Alanyaspor. The midfielder had been sidelined since early April due to a hamstring injury suffered in the Istanbul derby.

Ndidi missed several key Super Lig matches against Antalyaspor and Samsunspor while recovering. His absence was a concern for both club and country as the season approached its final stages. However, the former Leicester City star proved his recovery was complete by playing the entire 90 minutes.

Besiktas secured a comfortable 3–0 victory to progress in the competition. El Bilal Touré opened the scoring in the 17th minute to give the Black Eagles an early advantage. The match remained tight until the final ten minutes when the hosts pulled away from their opponents.

Hyeon-gyu Oh doubled the lead in the 83rd minute to settle the nerves of the home supporters. Shortly after, Orkun Kökçü added a third goal to finalize the emphatic scoreline. Ndidi's presence in the heart of the midfield was vital in maintaining defensive stability throughout the contest.

This return is timed perfectly for the Nigerian national team's upcoming schedule. Eric Chelle is preparing to name his squad for a series of high-profile international matches this summer. The Super Eagles are scheduled to face top-tier European opposition in Poland and Portugal during June.

Before those glamour friendlies, Nigeria will participate in the 2026 Unity Cup at The Valley. They are confirmed to play Zimbabwe and will then face either Jamaica or India. Having a fully fit captain and midfield anchor is essential for Chelle’s tactical plans in these matches.

Besiktas supporters and the Nigerian technical crew will be encouraged by the player's durability in his first game back. Completing a full match without any signs of discomfort suggests the hamstring issue is fully resolved. Ndidi is expected to play a central role for his club in the final weeks of the Turkish season.
