Morocco 2025: Super Eagles Dismantle Algeria 2-0 to Reach AFCON Semi-Finals

Posted : 11 January 2026

Irreproachable Nigeria produced a superb masterclass to overwhelm and overrun a dazed Algeria, reaching the last four of the ongoing 35th Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

Desert Foxes goalkeeper Luka Zidane performed admirably in the first half, denying efforts from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as Nigeria exerted total control at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.

Osimhen cut to the right wing in the 7th minute, but his intelligent pass was cleared for a corner by Aissa Mandi, and his header from the resulting corner flew over the bar. Fifteen minutes later, Lookman sprinted past the defense following a great pass from Alex Iwobi, only for Zidane to smother his attempt.

Nigeria continued to press, and in the 25th minute, Zidane again thwarted Osimhen’s threat. With eight minutes left in the first half, Akor Adams had a chance from a swift counterattack but saw his effort sail over the bar.

Zidane and Algeria’s luck held in the first 45 minutes, but two minutes into the second half, Osimhen rose magnificently to head home from a perfect pull-out by defender Bruno Onyemaechi, putting Nigeria ahead. The move began with Frank Onyeka passing to Adams, who found Iwobi, who then played Onyemaechi for the cross.

Seven minutes later, another cross from Onyemaechi found Osimhen, but Zidane made the save. Three minutes before the hour, Nigeria doubled their lead as Adams finished a brilliant team move that started with Onyeka intercepting a Fennecs attack, passing to Iwobi, who set up Osimhen. The 2023 African Player of the Year found Adams, who rounded Zidane and slotted home his second AFCON goal.

With 10 minutes remaining, Adams nearly scored a brace for Nigeria as he met Osimhen’s cross with a diving header, but the ball hit the upright.

The victory sets up a dream semi-final clash for the Super Eagles against hosts Morocco at the Crown Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Wednesday night.
