Super Eagles Arrive in Bissau Ahead of Guinea-Bissau AFCON Qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have arrived in Bissau ahead of Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea-Bissau. Eric Chelle’s side will be seeking a second consecutive victory after opening their Group L campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in Uyo.

Nigeria fell behind in the 16th minute against Madagascar when Ehsan Kari converted an opportunity for the visitors. George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time on his senior international debut before fellow debutant Moses Usor completed the comeback in the 65th minute.

The result gave Nigeria three points from their opening fixture. Guinea-Bissau also started with three points after defeating Tanzania 2-0 in Zanzibar, with Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé scoring for the Djurtus.

Guinea-Bissau’s victory is particularly significant because Tanzania are one of the three co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON alongside Kenya and Uganda. Tanzania already have an automatic place at the tournament, leaving Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar competing for the qualifying position available to the highest-ranked non-host nation in Group L.

The Super Eagles have had little time to recover from Friday’s match in Uyo before travelling to Bissau. Chelle will now use the final training sessions to prepare his players for a Guinea-Bissau team that also enters the fixture with confidence after an away victory.

Ilenikhena and Usor have provided an immediate boost to Nigeria’s attack after scoring on their international debuts. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is also expected to remain an important figure after helping Nigeria protect their advantage against Madagascar.

Nigeria will again be without Victor Osimhen, who was ruled out of both September qualifiers while recovering from a muscle injury. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed before the international window that the striker would miss the matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The second Group L fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau. CAF lists the kick-off for 4pm GMT, which is 5pm Nigerian time.

With both teams entering the match on three points, the encounter provides an early test for Chelle’s new-look Super Eagles. Nigeria will aim to maintain their winning start while Guinea-Bissau will look to build on their victory over Tanzania.
