2025/2026 NNL Match Day 2: Sunshine Stars FC Returns to Winning Ways

Sunshine Stars FC returned to winning ways in spectacular fashion, defeating visiting Gateway FC 2–0 at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, during Match Day 2 of the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.

The Chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Divine Ogbonnaya, expressed profound appreciation to all football stakeholders and fans who turned out in their numbers to support the “Akure Gunners.” The victory marked a historic moment, coming 23 months after the team last played a league match at the renovated Ondo State Sports Complex.

The atmosphere was electric as supporters, admirers, and top football figures from across the state filled the stands to witness the long-awaited homecoming. Ogbonnaya described the massive turnout as “a clear testament to the unbreakable bond between Sunshine Stars and the good people of Ondo State.” He also noted that the crowd’s energy had a visible impact on the pitch and urged fans and stakeholders to continue their unwavering support as the team pushes for greater success this season.

The match itself lived up to expectations. Opeyeni Olufemi opened the scoring before Michael Olalusi sealed the victory with a well-taken finish, handing Gateway FC a defeat and providing Sunshine Stars with a perfect return to their fortress.

The ODSFA chairman reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting the team, stressing that consistent backing from fans will help Ondo State reclaim its pride in Nigerian football.
