Sunshine Stars face up against Kwara United FC in second stanza battle

Going into the second half of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Sunshine Stars of Akure had to make important decisions, including terminating the contract of their long-serving coach, Edith Agoye, to be replaced by another gaffer whom many have touted as one of the best hands in the Nigerian League, Kennedy Boboye.

The Akure Gunners will now bank on the experience of the newly appointed manager, Kennedy Boboye, and defender Godfrey Oboabona to cancel out Kwara United in Akure.

The Akure Gunners brought in Boboye to rescue the team following their indifferent results in the season, and the inclusion of the former Super Eagles defender should also play a role in the team.

For Sunshine Stars FC, it has been a mixed feeling for a club that played in last season's Super Six not to be among the top 12 but sits in the 13th position with 22 points from 19 matches, having won five matches, drawn seven, and lost seven.

For Kwara United FC, they took an audacious step with the acquisition of 10 new players in the NPFL mid-season transfer window.

The new players include Ibrahim Dehinde Ibrahim, Gbadamosi Jimoh Olamilekan, Odobu Obi Benard, Sanni Nurudeen Omolaja, Daniel Isaac Enemona, and Oladipo Kolawale Ridwan, a goalkeeper.

Others include Adeniji Kabiru Adewole, Alalade Abdulazeez Wasiu, and Ahmed Olarenwaju Yakubu, who are all making returns to the team.

The 10th player, Afeez Nosiru Babatunde, was signed much earlier during the same window and had played some matches in the first round.

The Afonja Warriors are desperately aiming to turn the season around and will have the opportunity to test their resolve in Akure, where they will face Sunshine Stars.

The last match before the break ended 1-0 in favor of Kwara United.
