2025 NWFL Championship Match Day 2: Sunshine Queens Secure Premiership Return

Posted : 16 September 2025

Sunshine Queens have secured an immediate return to the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership after narrowly defeating Unification FC 1–0 in Umuahia. A 79th-minute header from Lucky Victory made the difference, sending the Akure-based side back to the top flight at their first attempt.

Later in the day, Fortress Ladies played a goalless draw with Kwara Ladies, a result that mathematically guaranteed Sunshine Queens the top spot in Group A2 with six points and a game to spare.

In Group A1, Castmog Ladies continued their perfect start with a narrow 1–0 win over Royal Queens, courtesy of Zainab Odueke’s late strike. The Ogun State outfit now leads the group with six points from two matches, although their promotion hopes remain finely poised.

First Mahi Babes revived their chances with a 1–0 victory over Gallant Queens after Chidera Okechukwu capitalized on a goalkeeper Mutiyat Badmus error in the 61st minute. The final round of fixtures—First Mahi vs. Royal Queens and Castmog vs. Gallant—will ultimately determine who joins Sunshine Queens in the Premiership.

In Group B2, Imo Striker Queens strengthened their hold with a 2–1 win over Osun Babes. Goals from Chiamaka Damian and Precious Alex gave them a cushion before Omolola Asha reduced the deficit just before halftime, leaving Imo Striker atop the group with six points from two matches. Elsewhere, Ghetto Tigers Ladies staged a dramatic comeback to beat Delta Babes 2–1. After Nancy Ayeta gave Delta an early lead, second-half goals from Rofiat Ewetade and Ebube Jude lifted the Tigers to second place with four points.

In Group B1, Wazbak Queens moved to the top after holding Pelican Stars to a 1–1 draw. Joy Irobi had put Pelican ahead before Abibat Adediran equalized. The standings could change on Tuesday, as Ahudiyannem Queens, currently on three points, can reclaim top spot if they win their postponed fixture against Chosen Generation Angels.
